After introducing the Skylake architecture, TPOLE now presents the SKYLAKE mobile version.
The first thing to point out in relation to these architectures is that they are all SoC (system on chip), and the chipset (which for Haswell platform was the QM87) is integrated directly into the processor.
This is due to the fact that the reduction of lithography has freed die on the processor. Intel® organized mobile architectures into 3 groups, here we will only list the two available for the embedded world:
- Skylake-H (SKL-H) – type BGA package
- Skylake-U (SKL-M) – type BGA package
The H Mobile processors are high performance while having a good consumer-performance ratio, reaching 4 physical and 4 logical cores and can handle 2 channel memory slots.
The U processors are low-power and are the best solution between performance and consumption available today, they come up to 2 physical and 2 logical cores and operate a single channel memory slots.
Skylake mobile: benchmark of some processors
By leveraging the CPU belonging to U and H family, taken on board and pc box by two of our suppliers, we will analyze the benchmark data evaluating them on the base of their TDP. The processors that will be analyzed are:
Version H
Xeon 1505M v5
i7 6820EQ*
i5 6400EQ**
Version U
Celeron 3955U
i5 6300U
i7 6600U
*Data about i5 6400EQ is calculated using the test software available on www.cpu-monkey.com
**Not having a given specific benchmark for i7 6820EQ we can use the data indicative of the version i7 6820HQ integrating it with the analysis made here.
VERSION H
VERSION U
As can be seen by comparing the benchmark data, as a function of the TDP, the results are extremely different.
It would be unfair however, to attribute the increase in tdp exclusively to the computational performance because an important role is also played by the integrated GPU.
Skylake mobile: integrated GPU
The CPUs proposed mount different GPUs with different performance and TDP.
H versions are assembled in the HD graphics of the family 530, respectively, the P530 version of the Xeon and the version 530 for i7-6820EQ and i5-6400EQ.
For U versions the following GPUs are available:
- HD graphics 510 for Celeron 3955U
- HD graphics 520 for i7-6600U and i5 6300U
The benchmark data of the family 530 are absolutely higher than the GPU mounted on the models U.
Despite the low consumption also GPUs mounted on U models have very interesting performances if compared to the consumption of the GPU mounted on the desktop Broadwell 5th generation: HD Graphics 5600.
All the GPUs integrated in this CPU support:
- DirectX 12
- Open GL 4.4
- 4K resolution
