The Right System for the Desired Performance
When designing new machinery, or a new version of an existing one, it is necessary to accurately size the control system’s performance to ensure the best price-performance ratio. On one hand, it’s important to contain BOM costs, but equally necessary to ensure that the system in question can be adequately controlled, also considering software and operating system updates which, over time, always tend to grow in size and become more demanding in terms of computing power and memory.
The TPole Consultancy Department
For this reason, we urge our clients, both existing and potential, to utilize our consultancy service dedicated to performance analysis and optimal sizing of computers and controllers for their applications. TPole’s established thirty years of experience allows us to assist clients in selecting each component of the control system, aiming to maximize performance and reliability, while paying constant attention to the economic profile and without significantly burdening project and production costs.
Processor and Operating System
The combination of the right processor and Microsoft operating system license can help significantly reduce costs. In fact, there are three Microsoft licensing tiers for the operating system: Entry, Value, and High End. If the processor requires the Entry license, its cost is considerably lower compared to the Value or High End licenses. For example, the i9-13900H processor (which requires the High End license) has 8 E-cores and 6 P-cores for a total of 20 threads; architecturally, it is similar to the i5-14500 (which requires a Value license).
The latter has slightly lower benchmark performance scores, but the cost of a system based on the i5 is significantly more advantageous, both due to the lower processor cost and the cost of the VALUE operating system license. Furthermore, the i5-14500 belongs to the embedded category, which offers longer-term availability expectations, unlike the i9-13900H. Another concept that many of our clients care about is power dissipation and generated heat. By choosing the processor appropriately, we can not only offer contained costs but also correctly size the power supply and heat dissipation, reducing the need for additional heatsinks and heat exchangers.
The Strategic Choice to Work with TPole
TPole’s knowledge goes far beyond the mere selection of components from a single-brand or multi-brand stock. Having worked over the years with hundreds of clients, helping them bring to market thousands of different projects, we can offer the substantial difference between rough estimation and precise sizing, justified by price and performance.
